We can all agree, Lena Dunham is a divisive character for many people.

However, the 32-year-old writer, actor and director took to Instagram to post a video of herself as a little girl, and the message behind what she wrote is important.

Aside from the clip being extremely cute, Lena writes beautifully about what it's like as an adult to think back on yourself as a child.

''Something about having been a child, full of pure awe on a dinky ride and crying 'whoaaa' to nobody in particular. Something about the safety of my father’s 80s business-casual armpit,'' she writes.

Anyone who as ever had a rummage through old photo albums of their childhood pictures will recognise this feeling.

First of all, it's one of longing; longing for simpler times when all you had to worry about was who your partner for the next school trip would be, or what your mother was making that night for dinner.

Remember that?

It's also, as Lena points out, a feeling of knowing what was to come, knowing what is going to happen to the innocent kid that you are in those family albums and home videos.

Lena continues in her post, that it's ''something about knowing everything I’d do and that would be done to me and that those things really aren't that different and that my job is to protect this tiny girl and to try and honour the tiny girl inside everyone else. We don’t always get it right. We try again. Whoaaa.''

Her 3.1 million followers were all moved by her heartfelt words and their support poured out in the comments.

One said, ''beautifully said, honour that little girl, she is you.''

It is clear that Lena's words have had an impact on many of her followers, with one in particular penning a beautiful response to her post.

She wrote, ''I’ve never commented on a celebrity post, but I just had to say thank you for this. I have a six month old baby girl and since she was born I’ve been overwhelmed by the feeling that I am the keeper of her memories and the protector of her childhood. This video and your words were such a poignant reminder of that. So, thank you.''

A simple post it may be, but the sentiment beneath it is strong: childhood is brief as is innocence.

So instead of constantly rushing around and always looking ahead to what's coming next - cherish the here and the now with your children, for it all goes by in the blink of an eye.
