Lyme disease is an infection caused by the bacteria “borrelia burgdorferi”, which is carried by ticks. A tick bite from an infected tick will transmit the disease if the tick remains in the skin for at least 12 hours.

Symptoms of Lyme disease are hard to differentiate from many other illnesses. Early symptoms may include a rash that appears as bulls-eye type rash that has a red spot with a red ring surrounding it. The rash will grow and although it is not painful or itchy, it will be warm to the touch. Additional symptoms include headache, fatigue, swollen lymph nosed, sensitivity to light, tingling or numbness in the feet and hands, fever, and meningitis. When the condition goes untreated, more severe symptoms such as arthritis, irregular heartbeat, and cognitive degeneration will appear.

If your child has the symptoms of Lyme disease, contact the doctor right away, especially if you live in an area where there have been confirmed cases of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is treated with oral antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs. The disease takes about four weeks to respond to treatment.
