A terrifying bug with no cure is putting children in danger of paralysis and even death within just days of picking it up.

Four Scottish youngsters, who have all lost the use of their limbs, have been diagnosed with the disease already, with one young boy currently fighting for his life at an Edinburgh hospital.

Victims can also be left fighting to breathe and it can furthermore result in neurological issues.

Children aged between four and 12 are most in danger of contracting Enterovirus D68 - described as a 'polio-like' virus which can result in long-term nerve damage.

In Britain, there have been 38 incidents of the disease this year alone - prompting Public Health England to issue a warning to parents.

There is currently no cure or anti-viral vaccine for Enterovirus D68 and it can be spread easily through coughs and sneezes.

An outbreak in US killed 14 people and infected 1,153 between August 2014 and January 2015.
