He paid a rare but touching tribute to his late mother last week, and Prince William drew on his feelings and experiences as a father to send an emotional message out to the world yesterday.

The Duke of Cambridge was giving a speech on the protection of endangered species at King’s College, London yesterday when he made a poignant reference to children George and Charlotte.

“Children born this year, like my daughter Charlotte, will see the last wild elephants and rhinos die before their 25th birthdays,” explained the 33-year-old.

The father-of-two added: “My rejection of ivory today is not a judgment of past generations. It is an acceptance of the world as I find it today and the world I want my children, George and Charlotte, to inherit.”

Needless to say, the doting dad’s choice of words really hit home, and a number of people took to social media to praise him for his impassioned speech.

Addressing animal-lover Ricky Gervais, one Twitter user wrote: “Prince William heard you. He has gone to battle for rhinos and elephants. Against the poachers and the medicine trade.”

Let’s hope that William’s words will have a broader impact in the animal world.
