Generally, babies do not bite while they are actively feeding – unless they lose suction. If your baby usually bites you when he or she has stopped actively sucking, and is falling asleep, then it may simply be that he or she is startled by falling asleep, and bites down as a reflex.
It may also be that once your child has satisfied his or her hunger or thirst, your child decides to test out his or her teeth or gums. Instead of trying to pull your baby away (which will hurt more) bring your child in closer to your body. This will usually work, although you may also have to slip your little finger into your child’s mouth, to gently unclamp his or her jaws.
Saying no in a firm voice can usually stop a baby who is starting to bite, and if you make a point of actively disengaging your child every time this happens, he or she should quickly learn that biting is not acceptable behaviour.
