Singer Michelle Heaton has revealed details of a worrying accident earlier this week involving her daughter Faith, in the hopes that other parents will take note.
Michelle was leaving a friend's house with her two children, when two-year-old Faith stumbled and fell down a three-metre manhole.
"It had the cover on it – hence why I ignored it as a safety risk," Michelle wrote in her column for OK magazine. "But for whatever reason it had moved slightly and left a small gap which was big enough for Faith to push through."
The celeb mum revealed she had been strapping her nine-month-old son A.J. into his car seat and only took her eyes off Faith for a moment when the incident happened.
"I turned to check on A.J. and as I turned back, after what must've only been a second, Faith had gone. Any parent, grandparent, god parent etc. can only imagine what went through my head. Had someone taken her? Had she stepped out onto the road?"
Michelle added that as soon as she realised what had happened she froze and began screaming for help. "Thankfully, two builders ran over... One of them lowered himself into the hole while the other supported him so they could fetch Faith." The pop star shared an image of the empty manhole to show just how deep it was:
The little one was uninjured but both mum and daughter were left in shock. "She [Faith] was covered head-to-toe in sewage... all I wanted to do was to hold her but I had to check she was OK first."
Fortunately the toddler didn't suffer any illness as a result of her exposure to the sewage, but mum Michelle said she hoped that by sharing the story future accidents like this might be avoided.
"It's a miracle she escaped with a only few scratches and smelling worse than AJ's dirty nappies... Let's take this as a warning to never assume a manhole is safe."
