Under normal circumstances, floaters are completely normal and generally happen when a person is looking directly at a light background such as a clear blue sky. If however, you begin to experience them more frequently, if they start appearing in every background, increase in amount, or if there is any accompanying vision loss then it is vital immediate medical advice is sought. This can be an early sign of detached retina so urgent medical care is required.

Symptoms of a detached retina include flashing lights and increased levels of floaters in the eye. These two symptoms will accompany loss of vision. If a detached retina is diagnosed then surgery will be required to reattach the retina to the back of the eyeball.
