Our intuition can almost always tell us when there’s something up, which is why it is so important that we get to know it as best we can. The importance of familiarising yourself with your vagina, in particular, cannot be emphasised enough, and here are some tips for ensuring that you are monitoring yourself and your health to the best of your ability.

Get to know your body

Too often we are confronted with a lump or bump and are unable to recall where it came from or how long it’s been there. Familiarise yourself with your vagina so that, if changes do occur, you will be able to get a second opinion and take appropriate action.

Use a mirror

It’s important to get a thorough look at yourself both externally and internally. The best way to do this is to use a mirror, propping one foot up on the bathtub so as to position yourself into an appropriate angle. Examine yourself carefully and often, and get yourself into a routine so that it becomes normal practice. A good time to do this is after a shower.

Go through a checklist

Take note of the shape of your vagina and labia, as well as any spots, moles, cuts, lesions or discharge. If you notice anything unusual, or any obvious changes, be sure to book an appointment with your doctor or ob-gyn to investigate further.

Always go to your doctor and get a second opinion if you are worried. Prevention is the best form of protection, and the first step is monitoring your own body and health.
