Getting the kids to tidy up after themselves may sometimes feel like an impossible challenge.

However, with a few simple tricks up your sleeve, you’ll be amazed at how much they’re eager to pitch in.

Make it into a musical: Most kids love to show off their dancing and singing talents, so why not turn the tidy up session into a musical session. Put on their favourite songs, and watch them get to work as they prance and leap around the house. Not only will it energise everyone cleaning up, but it will also help lighten the mood and add to the fun.

Make light of the situation: Most children won't be in the mood to do as their told after a scolding about how messy their room is. Instead of making it an order, make light of the task at hand. Speaking with an easy, upbeat tone can set the mood for the whole process. Rather than saying, "Look at this terrible mess!” try a cheerful "Oh, wow! I think a naughty clown came and threw your toys all over the room!” This will get them giggling and ready to have more fun helping mum tidy up.

Work together: Rather than making orders about what needs to be done, get in there and clean up with them. Use it as a learning opportunity. Cleaning up together this way is an excellent way to model helpful, pitching-in behaviour while also reinforcing the notion that mum shouldn’t be doing it all.
