On Valentine's Day this year, Tom Daley and his husband Dustin Lance Black announced some thrilling news: they're about to become fathers for the first time!

Now Tom, 23, and his screenwriter husband have opened up about their choice to have their child via surrogate.

They also shared their thoughts on UK surrogacy laws, which they said were behind the times compared to laws in the States.

The Olympic athlete said on Attitude magazine's Heroes podcast, "We've done research into loads of different ideas, through adoption or through surrogacy and all that kind of stuff.

"Well actually the laws in the UK don't actually permit commercial surrogacy."

Indeed, it is illegal in the UK to pay a surrogate, except for their reasonable expenses during pregnancy like loss of earnings and travel costs.

Dustin, who is American, weighed in on UK surrogacy laws, saying, "That was a bit of shock to me. That in a place like this, that seems so progressive and so far ahead still to the United States on things like employment, housing, security and marriage.

"But on surrogacy, it's not available in the same way."

The couple are becoming parents, thankfully, as they shared a beautiful ultrasound image of their unborn baby in their pregnancy announcement.

After sharing their news, though, there was outrage expressed on social media about a columnist's divisive comments.

One person tweeted in support of the dads-to-be, "So many children are being raised in households filled with bitterness, anger and hatred... wouldn’t one rather a child be raised by a committed, loving couple than not?"

Dustin later tweeted a message of love and tolerance, though it was not directly addressed to anyone: "My reaction to others’ hate, bigotry and misinformation will not include anger or hate.

"For me, the path forward is lit with curiosity, listening, correcting the record when possible, and as best I can, leading with an example of strength and love."

What a class act. We wish them the best of luck in their journey to parenthood!
