We have been closely following the story of baby Maria, the newborn child who was found abandoned in the Rathcoole area earlier this month, and this week an update has been released.

According to the child and family agency Tusla, which was granted an interim care order for the child, little Maria is ‘flourishing’ under the care of foster parents.

A spokesperson for the agency revealed: “She is safe and well in foster care, and she is being well looked after and is flourishing with a family.”

While the agency is not in the habit of releasing such statements to the public regarding its specific cases, a source told the Irish Daily Star that the decision was made following an overwhelming number of well wishes from the public.

Baby Maria’s story has touched hearts all over the country, after it was reported that she was discovered at the side of a road by a member of the public, her umbilical cord still attached, and wrapped in a blanket and a plastic bag.

Gardaí have issued a number of pleas for information in the hopes that Maria’s mother will come forward, even going on to release a photograph of the child earlier this month. They have at all times emphasised that the welfare of Maria and her mother are their priority.

This story is particularly heartbreaking, but we are so relieved to hear that Maria is doing well.
