By now, we are well-used to seeing him taking big risks with his own safety in the name of TV entertainment, but this week adventurer Bear Grylls has been criticised over his approach to parenting.

The TV star, who is dad to 10-year-old Jesse, eight-year-old Marmaduke and six-year-old Huckleberry, caused controversy as he opened up about taking his children paragliding without the recommended safety gear.

In an interview with The Times, the 41-year-old said: “People go mad over the fact that I take my sons paragliding. But I am really safe with it. We probably should have helmets and stuff like that, but the thing is, I know how to do it safely.”

He added: “The law would say: ‘Do the helmet’, but I know the sport well, I know where the risks are.”

In another controversial admission, he revealed what he told his eldest son when he broke his leg jumping off a slide: “Bones heal and chicks love scars, so remember that.”

A number of concerned parents have taken to Twitter to voice their disapproval of Grylls’ approach to sport with his children.

One wrote: “Shocked to see Bear Grylls’ children don’t wear helmets…” Meanwhile, others branded Grylls an ‘idiot’ and ‘arrogant’.
