Two children, a three-year-old and a nine-year-old, are said to be in a serious condition in hospital following a bus crash in Co. Kerry yesterday evening.

At around 6pm, a car with five passengers and a minibus carrying ten - eight of them children - suffered a head-on collision. The three year-old and the nine-year-old both suffered head injuries, with the eldest also suffering abdominal injuries, and were taken to Cork University Hospital.

A number of other passengers also hurt in the collision were taken to Kerry General hospital.

The incident happened just outside Farranfore and medical director of the National Ambulance Service told the Irish Independent: “It was fortunate that the incident happened so close to an airport... we were able to transfer the patients to Cork University Hospital.”

He added: "We train for this. We plan for this all the time. Last night this training stood in good stead for us.”

Our thoughts are with the families at this time and we wish everyone a speedy recovery.
