What are the causes of eczema?

Many individuals have a genetic predisposition to atopic dermatitis. Those who are affected by this disorder have a highly reactive immune system. Moreover, atopic skin shows severe dryness.

Because the skin barrier has become modified, the allergens in our environment are able to deeply penetrate into the lower epidermal layers. They then stimulate the immune system, which overreacts. This causes clinical signs of atopic eczema to appear: itchiness, inflammation and oozing. Environmental factors may also explain the significant increase in atopic dermatitis over the past few years: pollution, passive smoking, etc.

Certain forms of eczema can be triggered by substances that come in contact with the skin, similar to an allergic reaction. Soaps, cosmetics, clothing, detergents, jewellery, or sweat can all cause the condition to flare-up. Environmental allergens may also cause outbreaks of eczema. Changes in temperature or humidity, or even stress can lead to outbreaks of eczema in some people.
