It can be disconcerting when we notice the back of our baby’s head is flat like a board. However, this is a very common side effect of an infant’s sleeping position. Due to the high risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), medical professionals are now advising all parents to place their babies on their back to sleep. This technique has drastically reduced the number of SIDS deaths around the globe. Unfortunately, this sleep position is also the main cause of a flat head in children.
The good news is that most babies will grow out of a mild flat head on their own. As babies grow, they determine the position they sleep in. Pediatricans also recommend turning the child to its side, and alternating sides, to help reduce the risk of flat head.
When the baby is awake, tummy time and side positioning is encouraged since this additional time laying flat on their backs can make flat head worse. Be assured, however, that the majority of the time a flat head is a cosmetic or appearance issue and will not result in any type of damage or deformity to the brain or skull. If you have growing concerns, have a talk with your pediatrican.
