Children adore puppies and a family dog can be a nice addition to your brood, however there are certain dogs that don’t mix well with families. Jack Russells and Kelpies can be too aggressive, especially for small children. So to keep your child safe, here are 5 dogs ideal for families.

King Charles spaniel
These soft, floppy eared dogs are playful and are also very cute. They don’t make too much noise and they aren’t too concerned about their place in the pecking order. Check that your dog is free of a genetic disease called Syringomyelia before buying him. This is a disorder which can cause
severe head and back pain for the dog.

Cavoodle
These dogs are a cross between a Cavalier King Charles and a poodle. They have the intelligence of a poodle with the easy-going nature of a spaniel, making them perfect for a family. They also don’t shed hair, making them a far more hygienic dog to have around the home.

Labrador
Labradorsare ideal if you are looking for a big dog. Not only are they seriously cute as puppies, but they are relaxed and relatively easy to train. Golden Labs are probably better than the chocolate-coloured Labs as the darker ones tend to get easily distracted.

Schnauzer
Schnauzers are very loyal dogs and make great companions for children growing up. They do tend to bark a bit but they are dependable and will have a strong bond with your family.

Pug
Boxers are a great family pet but the smaller version is better if you have small children, as boxers can often knock over toddlers. Pugs have big personalities, and while they can be a little hyper at times, they are easy to take care of.

How to keep your kids safe around dogs:
To ensure that your dog and children live safely together, here are a few simple rules you should apply to your home
  • Make sure your dog knows that the kids come first. If you are holding your baby, don’t put the baby down when the dog is looking for attention.
  • Don’t allow the dog into the bedrooms.
  • Put your fingers into a puppy’s mouth. Children will often stick there fingers into the dogs mouth so if your dog is used to it from a young age, it shouldn’t be a problem.
