It’s a sad fact but suicide is becoming more and more common among teens and young adults in Ireland. It particularly affects young males.
Depression, when left untreated can leave teens thinking suicide is the only option. Feelings of hopelessness can lead to impulsive but deadly acts.
Are there warning signs of teen suicide?
The majority of teens who commit suicide will give clear-cut warning signs such as the following:
- An obsession with death
- Openly making suicide threats
- Writing or drawing about death
- A change in appearance or mood
- Defiant behaviour
- Violent behaviour
- Feelings of guilt
- A change in sleep or eating habits
- Giving away belongings
- Staying away from people and activities.
If your teen’s behaviour hints of suicide, seek help immediately. You shouldn’t hesitate to call a GP, suicide hotline or visit the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department of your local hospital. With the correct support and treatment, teens who consider suicide can recover and return to a healthy life.
