When her friend and colleague of 27 years, Mel Giedroyc, became a mother, this much-loved television star found herself longing to experience the same joy, but devastatingly for Great British Bake-Off host, Sue Perkins, this is unlikely to happen.

Opening up during a candid interview with Good Housekeeping this week, the popular presenter revealed that she has been living with a brain tumour which has ultimately rendered her incapable of conceiving children.

While the tumour, which was discovered during a medical procedure eight years ago, is thankfully benign, it has unfortunately affected the production of various reproductive hormones.

Commenting on the effect the diagnosis has had on her, the 45-year-old star said: "Sometimes it’s big and makes me mad, and sometimes it’s small and is in the background. Sometimes it screws up my hormones. I have various tests now to make sure the side effects aren’t too onerous."

Sue, whose friendship and on-screen chemistry with co-host Mel has captivated television audiences for years, admits that watching Mel become a mum was a bittersweet experience.

With admirable honesty, Sue questioned the effect it would have on their relationship, saying: "When she [Mel] had her first child I thought: this is an experience I won’t have or share. You’ve gone somewhere I can’t go. You think it is going to destroy something, but actually it hasn’t destroyed anything – we have very different lives and different experiences now."

While the growth on Sue's pituitary gland is not life-threatening, the star has at times struggled to cope with its various other implications, saying: "I don't know if I would have gone on to have children. But as soon as someone says you can't have something, you want it more than anything."
