What you need
- Pumpkins (or smaller gourds for the younger kids)
- Marker
- Sharp knife
- Spoon
- Newspaper
- Tea Light Candle
How to carve your pumpkin
- Spread the newspaper out over the area that you are using
- Using the sharp knife, the adult will cut out a circular shape at the top of the pumpkin / gourd for the opening.
- Using the spoon, the child can then help scoop out the insides – this can be a little tough and will need adult assistance and supervision.
- When all the pulp is removed, you need to decide what shapes you are using, which the kids can help with.
- Give each of them a pumpkin (or a smaller gourd for the youger kids) and a marker to decorate. Allow them to use their imagination – it doesn’t have to be the traditional face, it can be stars and moons, or just simple shapes like circles. The most important part is to keep it fun.
- When they have finished drawing the designs, the adult can then use the sharp knife to cut out the shapes
- Adult will insert the tea light and light on Halloween night and place at the front door
