Yesterday, we reported on how the president of an internet start-up had issued a public apology to the female staff she had ‘dismissed’ for being mothers.

Now, today, an Australian broadcaster has prompted anger after admitting to having “a big jar of condoms at work” so as to discourage her staff from having children and taking maternity leave.

The revelation emerged when Linda Wayman, a senior executive for Southern Cross Austereo - which runs the radio station involved in the infamous royal prank scandal - said that a third of her staff were either on maternity leave or covering for someone who was.

“We do have a big jar of condoms at work. I’m not lying, I’m not exaggerating. I do encourage people regularly, to have sex with condoms,” Wayman said at a conference on recruitment and culture.

Wayman, who is boss of the broadcaster’s stations Mix 94.9 and Hit 929, also revealed that she gives out an “Angelina Jolie” award, to reward staff who have progressed in more senior roles made available by women on maternity leave.

“Our acting brand director for Hit 929 at our Christmas party last year received the Angelina Jolie Award, for the person who has benefited most for other people’s pregnancies. If women weren’t pregnant then she would not have got this turbo-charged career opportunity,” she added.

While Ms Wayman’s comments have drawn the ire of the public on social media, the broadcaster’s chief executive Rhys Holleran told the Sydney Morning Herald that her words were “clearly…tongue-in-cheek”.
