What do I need to know when buying baby clothes?

If you are expecting a new baby follow these helpful tips to ensure you get the most out of your purchases.
  • Don’t buy too many clothes before your baby is born – especially in newborn sizes. Many people are likely to give you baby clothes as presents so you will probably be well stocked in clothes for your newborn.
  • Always choose one size above your baby’s actual age. Babies grow quickly and sizes can often be on the small side. Most 6-month-old babies will fit nicely into size 9-12 months, 1 year olds can wear size 2 etc.
  • Make sure you are taking the season into account. If you are buying clothes that you hope to last a few months, make sure they are suitable for later on in the year as the weather gets colder/warmer.
  • Be very selective when buying up-market clothes. There isn’t much point in buying expensive vests, tights or plain tops. If you are going to buy designer gear, it should be good pieces like coats or dresses so they can be seen and admired. Also take into consideration the practicality of the item. A coat or good trousers could get a nice bit of wear, so will be worth spending a bit of extra money on.
  • Try not to bother with baby shoes, unless you are going out in cold weather. They are awkward to get on those squirmy little feet. Instead opt for soft-soled shoes with elastics at the ankles to keep feet warm.
  • Don’t buy pyjamas or other clothing items that have buttons down the spine. Newborns spend most of their time on their back and clothes with buttons along the back will be irritating for baby. They are also very awkward to put on!
  • Opt for pieces that are easy to pull on and off. Items with zips are much easier than ones with buttons and will save you a lot of frustrated time as your baby squirms while you try to dress him or her.
  • Choose items that are machine washable. You’ll be too exhausted to be hand washing items so make your life easier and buy bits you can just pop in the wash.
  • Try not to buy lacy knitted clothes as babies can easily get their fingers caught.
  • Think about the opening for your baby’s head. A newborn’s head will be flopping all over the place so you won’t want to pull anything over it. Make sure there is a big opening, and snaps to close it up.
