10 Halloween arts & crafts to do with your children that aren’t just carving pumpkins

Halloween is a great time to get crafty with the children- it kills two birds with one stone, the kids are entertained during the mid-term break or dark evenings, and you get fun Halloween decorations that won’t break the bank!

We love the tradition of carving pumpkins, but sometimes they’re just too messy, won’t last very long once they’ve been cut, and have had a huge price increase recently. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with some fun Halloween crafts for children of all ages to enjoy taking part in. Many of these art projects use things you already have around the house like toilet roll holders, cardboard and paper plates, so you won’t have to buy many new bits to get crafty! (You also get to use up some of your recycling pile!)

Painting pumpkins

If you don’t like the thought of cutting all of the insides of a pumpkin out to carve it, only for it to start rotting soon after, why not paint a pumpkin instead. You can also paint an orange if you don’t want to splurge on a pumpkin!

Halloween puzzles

Using ice lolly  sticks, align them up and paint a spooky picture or character on them. Break the sticks apart and try to rearrange them back into your original picture- the perfect Halloween puzzle.

Paper plate monster

All you need is paper plates and some glue to make your own Halloween friends. Let your little one paint the scariest creature they can imagine and you have the ideal Halloween decoration! Add some googly eyes if you want to bring your monster even more to life.

Ghoul leaves

Next time you’re out on a walk with your little ones, get them to collect some brown leaves that have fallen from the Autumn trees. Bring them home and paint ghouls on them to create your own army of terrifying ghosts.

All you need is some paper, paints and an apple. Get a grown-up to cut the apple in half and dip it face down into the paint. Now you have your own stamp to create a printing masterpiece. Use a marker to add a face to a scary creature or stalks to your pumpkins.

Toilet roll characters

Don’t throw out your old toilet rolls! Instead, use them to make Halloween characters. Let your child’s imagination run wild as they paint Frankensteins, bats, witches and pumpkins. Add extra pieces of coloured paper for hair or glue on pipe cleaners for arms.

Painting rocks

Head out to your back garden and go on the hunt for some rocks. Once your little one has collected some to their liking, bring them in, give them a rinse and dry if needs be, and paint some incredible beasts and spooky ghosts to scare everyone that visits your home this Halloween season.

Cardboard masks

If you have extra cardboard laying around the house from online orders or cereal boxes, why not turn them into your child’s Halloween costume? Make sure to mark where your child’s mouth, eyes and nose will be on the mask and take it off their head before you cut air holes into it! Draw Frankentein’s face or a futuristic robot onto the cardboard and you have their outfit for trick-or-treating sorted.

Ghost straws

Grab some paper or white card and a marker to make these little guys. Draw ghosts (or anything Halloween-y you’d like) and cut them out before you tape your creations onto your straws using sellotape. Perfect for any Halloween party or scary movie night!

Whether you want to use your child’s hand print or foot print, you can make some amazing Halloween pictures. A great idea to remember your baby’s first Halloween too.
