Many of us will recall cooking up a storm in the kitchen with our parents as kids, but can the same be said of the next generation?

This is the question being posed today, after new research revealed that three in every five Irish children do not know what a vegetable peeler is.

The revelation was unveiled as part of the Ben’s Beginners Survey, which shed light on the truth about Irish children’s involvement in home-cooking.

According to the survey – carried out across children aged four to 10, and their parents – there are major discrepancies between children’s culinary skills, and their parents’ perceptions of them.

Indeed, while 69 percent of parents believe their children have age-appropriate cooking skills, over a third of kids surveyed (38 percent) have never used a grater and over a quarter (26 percent) have never used a knife.

The information was released in conjunction with the launch of the Ben’s Beginners ‘Cook & Play’ scheme.

The scheme aims to encourage mums and dads to involve their children in cooking daily meals, in a bid to nurture a lifelong love of wholesome food.

The course includes age-appropriate recipe videos; skill-based videos to teach the elementary methods of cookery; along with fun, interactive games encouraging children to become more familiar with fruit and vegetables.
