Money definitely does not grow on trees and most of us have to work EXTREMELY hard just to be able to afford the essentials.

However, many of us are guilty of getting into the following money habits, often ending up spending more than we have.

Thankfully, however, there are plenty of things you can do to not only spend less, but save more.

1. Using your credit card to pay for non-essentials

Try to keep your credit card for emergencies or for making online purchases. Buying something that you don't need with money that you technically don't have is just paving the way for future debt.

2. Only saving what is left

Instead of waiting until the end of the month to save whatever is left in your account, try to put a small amount away as soon as you get paid. Whether it's €10 or €100, it will mean that you won't be tempted to waste any disposable income.

3. Taking too much cash out of the ATM machine

If it's in your wallet you are more likely to actually spend it then if you have to go to the ATM machine to take it out. Only take out what you need and nothing more.

4. Not keeping track of the money coming out of your bank account

Direct debits and standing orders are great, but if you don't keep track of where all your money is going then you will end up not knowing how much is actually in your account. Keep an eye on things so you don't end up missing a payment or falling short.

5. Not being involved in all money making decisions

Don't leave all the family money-making decisions up to just one person - while it can seem less stressful if only one person has to deal with it, it is a good idea for everyone to know exactly what is going on with the family finances.
