With a house full of kids, it can be hard to keep it sparkling - sticky hands are bound to end up on the walls and crackers are likely to be found squashed under the cushions. Instead of stressing about it and having your kids tip-toe around the living room, make it more accommodating to them and your life.

Here are five tips to keep in mind when doing up the living room so that it becomes more child-friendly.

Wipeable walls
Go for paint that is wipeable so even if chocolate fingers do end up all over the walls, you can easily wipe it away.

Avoid white
If possible avoid going for white colours on the walls, furniture, rugs or throws. White attracts dirt and you can’t hide a stain on a light colour like you can on something a little darker.

Stylish storage
No matter what you say, toys are bound to end up in the middle of the room. Invest in a few stylish storage boxes that you can throw the toys into for a quick tidy up. Go with the moto – If you can’t see it it’s not there.

Go for leather
Go for leather couches as they wear really well or ones that are made with a stain-resistant fabric. Remember to choose a darker option as it will hold better than a light alternative.

Avoid corners
The sitting room is for relaxing, not stressing about your toddler running into a table corner so avoid putting in furniture with sharp edges. Choose oval coffee tables and cover up fireplace corners.

By working the room to suit your family life, you will go a long way to reducing your own stress.
