A mother from Co. Westmeath recalled the moment she learned her 6-year-old son had lost his leg in a lawnmower accident and described it as "every parent's worst nightmare."

Having fallen under a ride on lawnmower, Niamh Dufficy's son Conor had to have his leg amputated through the knee which left the child heavily medicated and in a wheelchair..

Despite struggling in the aftermath of the horrifying accident which took place less than a year ago, Conor has made massive progress and his proud mum credits her son's achievements with the help and encouragement of the Irish Amputee Football Association.

Learning to deal with the repercussions of the accident wasn't easy, with Niamh admitting: "We had never met another amputee and all of a sudden my son was an amputee. It was a life changer for everybody."

However, after being introduced to the Irish Amputee Football Association of Ireland, things began to change for Conor and his family.

Ahead of the Amputee World Cup last year, the association gave Conor the opportunity to meet other amputees for the first time by arranging a training session for the Irish team in his hometown of Moate.

Opening up about the effect this had on her son, Niamh said: "It was the first time we had met another amputee and the first time we had seen a prosthetic leg and it was the first time Conor had seen someone with a short leg like himself using crutches."

Within two days of watching the team train, brave Conor made the transition from wheelchair to crutches and Niamh feels that the organisation played a massive role in her son's recovery, saying: "It has been a wonderful thing for Conor and a huge support to our family coping with this."

Well done to Conor!
