Last month, Ann Charon Rodgers from Tucson, Arizona was making the two hour drive to Phoenix to visit her grandkids.

For her day trip to see the family, she brought her mobile phone and her rescue dog, Queenie.

However, Ann never made it to her grandkids' house.

Her car ran out of fuel somewhere near the White Mountain India Reservation in the Arizona forest.

With her dog Queenie, Ann, who is 72-years-old, went to try and find phone reception with no luck.

Then, disorientated, she and her four legged companion kept wandering.

The Arizona Department of Safety sent out rescue teams searching but were not successful.

Ann then took inspiration from the movies and spelled out “H-E-L-P” with sticks to signal any search helicopters.

For nine whole days Ann wandered with Queenie looking for some help. She told NBC News: “I just moved as fast as I could.”

“If I couldn’t do that, I crawled. If I couldn’t do that, I sat on my butt and crawled.”

Never once thinking of giving up.

It wasn’t until a forest ranger noticed Queenie that the rescue teams were able to find the pair and carry them both back to safety.

Ann was treated for exposure and then sent home.

"They said it was a miracle that they found me alive."

She said it was her “wisdom and memories” that got her through.
