As we reach the end of the month, many of us wonder what exactly we spent our money on and why we never have any left the week before payday. And while mortgages, bills, school and afterschool activities take a good portion of our wage, many of us are wasting quite a lot on non-essential items.

If you are looking at ways to save money or even to stop you going into the red more frequently than you’d like, here are eight things you need to stop throwing your money away on:

1. Banking fees

Most banks charge every time you use the ATM, put money in or take money out. And while most of these fees are quite small, they can add up over time and you can find yourself paying a small fortune every quarter.  Shop around for the best rates or look for a bank that doesn’t charge any.

2. Playing the Lotto

You might think all your money problems will be sorted if you won the lottery, but the chances of winning are so low you’d be better off saving that five euro.

3. Bottled water

Buy a reusable drink bottle and stop paying for water every time you go out.

4. Takeaways

The Friday night Chinese or the Saturday night pizza can add up if you are getting one every week. Stick to once a month or cut it out entirely.

5. Food

Only buy food you know you will eat otherwise a lot of it will just go to waste.

6. Missed direct debits

Banks charge you when you don’t have money in your account to pay a direct debit – and it can be quite a hefty sum. Make sure you always have enough and call the utility company if you know you are going to be late.

7. Using your credit card

Unless it is for an emergency you should leave your credit card at home. You end up paying more for items than you would have if you'd just paid in cash.

8. Gift cards

How many of us have found a gift card in our wallets only to find it has expired? Too many. Make sure you use up any voucher money or give it to someone else if you know you won’t.
