A mother was left shocked to learn that her newborn son had suffered a fractured skull after he was accidentally dropped by a nurse who was attempting to tend to him.

New mum, Jacqueline Hunt, was informed her son had sustained injuries while under the care of a nurse at the Uniontown Hospital in Pennsylvania.

Details of the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, were miscommunicated to the distraught mum in the aftermath of the event, with Jacqueline initially being informed that the baby had 'flopped' out of the nurse's arms.

However, subsequent details emerged which now indicate the nurse involved was responsible for the incident.

Upon learning that the medical professional at the centre of this case had fallen asleep and subsequently dropped her son on his head, Jacqueline expressed utter shock at both the incident and the hospital's subsequent handling of the situation.

Speaking to TV channel WPXI-TV, Eli's mum said: "If she was tired, she should have known professionally not to pick up this child. It’s just heartbreaking."

Showing compassion for the nurse, but disdain for the way in which the situation was handled, Jacqueline went on to say: "I mean, if it was an accident, you can admit it and tell us it was an accident. There's no need to lie."

Eli was initially placed in a neck brace but has, thankfully, now made a full recovery.
