Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, have released alarming figures regarding allegations of child neglect and abuse in the west of Ireland.

The organisation, which was established last year, aims to support and promote the welfare and protection of children, as well as aiding the development of families.

Having taken over from the HSE's children and family services, Tusla has reported that nearly 4,000 allegations of child abuse were reported in Galway over the past four years.

The abuse allegations are sexual, physical and emotional in nature with the highest number occurring in 2013 when a shocking 1250 allegations were recorded.

Once an allegation is made, a preliminary inquiry is conducted and officials determine whether an initial assessment will take place which involves meeting with the child, their parents and the relevant professionals.

The initial assessment process takes place in order to determine the risk factors involved before ascertaining whether further actions needs to be taken.

Of the 1250 allegations made in 2013, 1044 of these cases reached the initial assessment stage. Figures are unavailable for any stage after the initial assessment procedure.

If a child is considered at risk, they will be entered in to the child protection system.
