Concern has been raised today, after it was announced that certain chemotherapy treatments made in Dublin have been contaminated.

According to a letter released by Fannin Compounding Ltd, which produces the treatments, a production machine has been found contaminated with a dangerous bacteria.

The bacteria in question has been identified as bacillus cereus, which is linked with potentially fatal non-gastrointestinal-tract infections. Bacillus cereus is usually connected with food poisoning.

With the numbers of treatments affected as of yet unclear, Fannin has recalled several batches and sent letters out notifying specialists.

The machine involved in the contamination has now been identified, and an investigation is said to be taking place to ascertain how such an incident could have occurred.

Let’s hope that, with awareness, the impact of this incident will not be far-reaching.
