Over 30 visitors to Alton Towers were left stuck on the Smiler rollercoaster this afternoon, a year on from the crash that left a number of people seriously injured.

According to reports, the notorious Smiler broke down yet again today, leaving dozens of people trapped for over an hour.

A representative for Alton Towers issued a statement to the Independent, assuring that none of the riders were at risk.

“At no time were guests on the ride at any risk, and all were safely removed from the ride promptly by staff in line with our comprehensive safety procedures,” the spokesperson said.

They added that a ‘technical team’ was investigating the matter.

Frightening footage and images of the Smiler, frozen mid-air, have been uploaded to social media by visitors to the theme park today.

The latest incident comes just six months after the Smiler’s reopening following last year’s horror crash.

A number of people were left seriously injured in the crash, which took place in June 2015, with two people requiring amputations to their legs.

Thank heavens no one was injured in today’s incident.
