According to an announcement made today by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, one Closure Order and one Prohibition Order were served on food businesses in the Republic during the month of January.

It is understood that under the Food Safety Authority Act of 1998, Earl's Delicatessen of UCD's School of Architecture in Clonskeagh, Dublin 14  was issued with a Closure Order.

While under the EC Official Control of Foodstuffs Regulations of 2010, Sheahans Butchers of Church Street, Caherciveen, Co. Kerry was served one Prohibition Order.

Further to this, it has been established that during the month of January, two successful prosecutions were carried out by the HSE on Kelleghan Catering Food Stall of Tallow, Co. Waterford and Millbridge Meats 3 of Kilmacrennan, Co. Donegal.

Issuing a statement on January's developments. Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive of the FSA, reminded establishments of the importance of exercising vigilance at all times with regards food safety while highlighting the importance of ensuring full compliance with food legislation.

“Food businesses must recognise that the legal onus is on them to make sure that the food they sell or serve is safe to eat,” she said. “This requires ongoing compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.“

“Food businesses should take full advantage of the information and support provided by the inspectorate and the FSAI. If any food business owner is unsure of what is required of them by law, they can contact the FSAI advice line, or visit its website or Facebook page,” she affirmed.
