The apartment in which Madeleine McCann stayed with her family prior to her disappearance has reportedly sold for half the asking price.

Apartment 5A in the Ocean Complex in Praia da Luz, in Portugal, had a sale price of €300,000.

It has been snapped up for €134,000 by a British widow, according to The Mirror.

The previous owner struggled to sell the apartment because of the notoriety surrounding the case.

The new owner, Kathleen Macguire-Cotton, has turned down offers of cash from nosy tourists who want to look around the apartment.

Mrs Macguire-Cotton said: “I’ve been offered money by the whole world, but I’m not interested.

"I don’t think that’s very fair to the McCann family or the people of Praia da Luz, upsetting everybody – it’s terrible."

It was recently revealed that ghoulish "investigation tours" of the area were being organised by a tour guide obsessed with the case.

Madeleine vanished without a trace in 2007, while staying at the holiday complex with her family.
