A 28-year-old man is currently in custody on suspicion of child neglect following claims he attempted to sell a baby to a stranger in a Manchester shopping centre.

The individual came to police attention after a member of the public raised the alarm and informed officials the man in question approached him with a three-month-old baby boy and attempted to negotiate a sale.

Commenting on the incident which took place at Manchester's Barton Arcade at 2.30pm yesterday afternoon, Detective Inspector Liam  Boden said: "We have now arrested a man on suspicion of child neglect."

Elaborating on their line of enquiry, the Det. Insp Boden went on to say: "[We] will be questioning him in relation to the incident as we try to establish the full circumstances."

Having earlier urged the public to come forward with information which may lead to an arrest, Det. Insp, Boden said: "We would like to thanks members of the public and the media for their assistance in publicising the appeal earlier today."

According to police reports, the infant at the centre of this shocking incident is safe and well.
