Since May, more than 2,000 immigrant children have been separated from their parents at the US-Mexican border, CNN reports.

This is part of President Trump's 'zero tolerance' immigration policy, in which those who attempt to illegally enter the US are prosecuted and separated from their children.

Now, investigative nonprofit ProPublica has released audio from inside a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility.

Heartbreaking, gut-wrenching - none of these words even begin to describe the contents of the tape.

10 Central American children cry for their parents, and one repeats the number of her aunt in hopes that she of contacting her relative.

It is estimated that these children are between the ages of four and 10, according to the person who provided the audio.

A Border Patrol agent can be heard in the clip joking, "Well, we have an orchestra here... What’s missing is a conductor."

The six-year-old girl who repeats her aunt's number was reportedly not able to stay with her relative as the aunt and her own nine-year-old daughter are seeking asylum in the US.

She says her niece is in a shelter now, but that the girl's mother may be deported without her.

“It was the hardest moment in my life. Imagine getting a call from your 6-year-old niece. She’s crying and begging me to go get her. She says, ‘I promise I’ll behave, but please get me out of here. I’m all alone'," the aunt told ProPublica.

The audio was given to civil rights attorney Jennifer Harbury by a person who wishes not to be identified out of fear of retaliation. Harbury gave the tape to ProPublica.
