Gardaí found a baby in a laneway as his young mother was smoking heroin nearby.

It is reported that the child was found looking dirty and in distress, and was later placed into care.

The baby’s mother was also placed in a residential care unit as she was under the age of 18 at the time of the discovery.

Since then, the mother was told she had to leave and find private rented accomodation.

A clinical psychologist said at the time of the discovery that the mother and her son had a “beautiful relationship” and said she would be able to care for her son if she could receive more support.

Fourteen months after a judge granted a short care order, a social worker said the mother had become “fully overwhelmed” by her addiction.

It is said the young mother has not found consistent homeless accommodation and had never utilised drug services made available to her.

The child has now been granted a full care order until the age of 18.
