Thanks to the advent of social media, it takes considerably less time for a trend to catch on in comparison to fads of previous generations, however it looks like one of the most recent has been raising more than a few eyebrows.

Taking inspiration from a trend which recently began in Japan, parents across the globe have been taking to social media in their droves in order to upload images of their baby’s face which they have manually contorted in an effort to create the ‘riceball baby’ effect.

In a recent days, thousands of adults have shared photos which capture a still of their own hands surrounding their child’s face in a move which some of have dubbed ‘cute’ while others have been less complimentary.

The trend, which has already spawned a hashtag and meme, sees the distortion of a baby’s face so that it may resemble popular side dish, o-nigiri.

The images, which have been circulated across various social media platforms in recent weeks, suggest that some children are more than happy to indulge their parent’s whims while others look less than pleased to have their small faces contorted in such a way.
