A US family is in mourning this week, following the tragic death of their five-month-old baby boy in what police have described as a ‘horrific’ accident in their home last Thursday.

According to a report in local newspaper The Flint Journal, the tot lost his life after being badly burned when his bassinet caught fire. It is believed that the baby’s bassinet had been placed near to an open flame, with the bedding sparking the blaze.

Family members rushed the child to hospital, where he was treated for severe burns, but he sadly lost his life shortly after. The child’s parents were at work at the time of the accident.

Delivering a statement this week, Michigan police said that there was no foul play suspected in the baby’s death – rather, it was “a horrific accident”.

“It was just very traumatic – just a horrific scene. Emergency room nurses were temporarily stunned by it too,” said a police spokesman.

Our hearts go out to the family at this most difficult time. Their tragic loss once again highlights the importance of fire safety, especially where flammable materials like bedding and bassinet wicker are involved.
