Going into labour ahead of your due date is a frightening and often traumatic experience, so our hearts go out to the couple in the following story after their ordeal earlier this week.

A professional US basketball player, Iman Shumpert, has hit the headlines after delivering his daughter when his fiancée, Teyana Taylor went into labour in their bathroom.

According to an emotionally-charged post on the new mum’s Instagram, she didn’t even know that she was in labour until she felt her daughter’s head coming out on Wednesday.

On Dec 16th at 6:42am in our bathroom Junie decided she wanted to take her first breath into this world. She came out as a wonderful surprise to everyone! Not knowing I was in labor until I felt her head...it took two ten count pushes with my fiancé playing Dr and she entered this world into his bare hands! Eyes full of tears and barely able to speak to the emergency operator @imanshumpert tied a pair of red headphones around the umbilical cord and the ambulance made there grand entrance 5 min later. She opened her eyes right away, gazed into mine and never cried! He handed her to me wrapped in our bath towel and wiped her face for me to see what LOVE really is. She has blown Christmas away! Our family is complete. Her blueprint will be unmatched. Welcome Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. Mommy carried you. Daddy delivered you. #MeetTheParents we love you baby girl

With her due date set for mid-January, Teyana and Iman were understandably taken aback, but with no chance of making it to the hospital in time, they acted promptly.

Praising Cleveland Cavaliers star Iman, Teyana wrote: “It took two 10-count pushes with my fiancé playing doctor, and she entered this world into his bare hands!”

Iman’s improvisation skills have greatly impressed, with Teyana revealing that he used headphones to hold the umbilical cord until the ambulance arrived to take Mum and newborn Iman Tayla Jr. to hospital.

#Repost @imanshumpert ・・・ I've never held a woman on a pedestal quite like this before. I've never appreciated everything about a person so much. As we grow together you've taught me more about myself than I ever knew. You have changed my life forever. You have made a house a home. You have carried the next generation. And you have proven to me that love is real and genuine. I know you can't drink while you're pregnant...and you'll probably pass out after dinner and not make it to the club lol. But I'm screaming HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you while you're in Chicago! You need anything while you're there you know I got you...that's kind of my neck of the woods.  Smile on your special day sweetheart...you make every woman want to wear 25 just like you! ---- I love you babyyyyyy

What a tale to tell the little one when she gets older! Congratulations to the new parents.
