Speaking at a conference on fertility at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London, The One Show host, Alex Jones admitted that she never realised the impact her age would have on fertility.

The 39-year-old married Charlie Thompson last year, and while they have not started trying for a baby “in earnest” just yet, she never considered her age would ever be a problem.

"For me the penny didn't drop. I thought, I've just met this boy, I've got this lovely job, that I absolutely, to this day, adore, although it's not more important than a family - I'd like to be really clear about that," she said at the conference.

During the Summit it was noted that many women were putting off starting a family as they tried to establish careers. However, Alex, who has always been labelled a career girl, said that there was a lack of information about the risks associated with delaying pregnancy.

"Safer sex is important but so is learning about fertility otherwise you end up where I am now saying: 'Oh egg freezing, I don't know about that'".

Calling for more education when it comes to fertility, Alex said: "I think what I have heard is that some doctors have been unhelpful and sometimes even embarrassed to talk about it with a couple, which is unhelpful for some women in their thirties."

"I think young women need to be informed about conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome and all sorts of conditions that affect fertility."
