A Donegal community is said to be on high alert this weekend, following a terrifying incident that took place on Thursday afternoon.

According to reports, a 12-year-old boy was on his way home from school just after 3pm, in Dungloe, when he was approached by a man wielding a knife.

The Mirror reports that the man shouted at the young boy and waved the knife at him, before chasing him for a time.

Thankfully, the boy managed to make it safely back to his house, unharmed.

The incident was immediately reported to the gardaí, who have appealed for the suspect to come forward.

In the event that the incident was ‘a prank gone wrong’, a garda representative urged: “Come forward and put the boy’s mind at ease and that of his family.”

“It will also allay the fears of the local community, which is understandably concerned by this very serious situation,” the rep added.

In the meantime, authorities have urged parents to remain vigilant and accompany their children to school, until they get to the bottom of the case.

Let’s hope the gardaí catch the person responsible.
