When a teacher asked her class to share the things that they don’t like about being the gender they are, some of the responses received were incredibly poignant.

One none-year-old boy, in particular, gave some eye-opening responses that will really make you think about what it’s like to grow up around gender stereotypes.

Under the heading of ‘What I don’t like about being a boy’, his list read as follows:

  • Not being able to be a mother
  • Not supposed to cry
  • Not allowed to be a cheerleader
  • Supposed to do all the work
  • Supposed to like violence
  • Supposed to play football
  • Boys smell bad
  • Having an automatic bad reputation
  • Grow hair everywhere

With International Men’s Day falling earlier this week, the boy’s list serves as an important reminder of what it’s like for children exploring their identities among these kinds of stereotypes.

What are your thoughts on the list?
