It is important for women to regularly check their breasts and be breast aware. Knowing what is normal for your body will help you notice any changes quickly.

Conducting a self-examine is simple and only takes a few minutes.
  • Using a mirror, check your breasts for any changes in size, shape and contour. Check the skin for an ‘orange peel’ appearance, dimpling, redness or puckering. Look for any changes on or around the nipple including flaky or crusted skin and for swelling in your armpit or around the collarbone.
  • Some women like to check the breast tissue while lying down, others prefer doing a self examine in the shower. Choose the method you are most comfortable with.
  • Feel the tissue for lumps by making circular movements around the breast using the pads of your three middle fingers.
  • Ensure the entire beast area is checked by going up to the collar bone and down until you can only feel ribs.
  • Examining the underarms is just as important as the actual breast and can be done while sitting or standing with the arm slightly raised.
