After almost seventy years apart, twin brothers who were separated at birth following World War II have been reunited by the Red Cross.

The brothers, George Skrzynecky and Lucian Poznanski, were born in Kassell, Germany after their Polish mother was sent to a forced labour camp.

Following her liberation, she gave birth to the boys who were subsequently adopted once it was ascertained their mother was too ill to care for them.

The children were sent to their mother's native country following their adoption, but neither were informed they had a twin.

Having been raised separately, both brothers subsequently learned of the circumstances surrounding their birth, with Lucian discovering he was a twin upon being drafted into the army and George learning of his sibling's existence after stumbling across official documents as a teen.

George, who had been searching for his brother since the 1960s, was reunited with Lucian after a search by the Red Cross Restoring Family Links Programme paved a way to each other.

In a heartbreaking twist, it was revealed that the twins' mother, who died six years after their birth, had searched for her children and hoped they would be returned to Germany, but was informed this wouldn't be possible.

Documents confirmed their mother's heartache, stating: "By error the children were repatriated to Poland without their mother being notified."

Opening up about the emotional reunion, Lucian said: "I don't care about winning the lottery, I just want to have my brother by my side."

Echoing his brother's sentiments, George, who moved to California following a family rift instigated by the discovery in his teens, said: "All my life I wanted to know my family."

Devastated by their mother's loss, Lucian lamented the circumstances which led to their separation, saying: "When I finally learned the whole truth I cried for my mother. She lost two sons."

Eager to focus on the positive, Lucian's brother insisted: "The story is closed. The best part of everything is that we finally found each other after so many years of separation. What happened in the past, you cannot change it."

It has been established that the brothers' father was a US soldier who returned to the States before the birth of his sons.
