The Dublin Tenants Association (DTA) is calling for the creation of new laws to stop culture capitalists evicting families.

Claiming that the coalition Government attracted vulture funds to Ireland, they want new measures to be implemented to protect tenants and homeowners.

“The reality is that government policy has been to facilitate vulture funds at every turn, without any research being conducted into the impacts of international funds on the Irish housing system,” said DTA spokesman Patrick Bresnihan.

“This is not a natural disaster, it is a policy decision. What would be more helpful is the immediate implementation of the changes we need to protect the right to housing against the predatory strategies of the vulture funds.”

They are asking for the following:

  • An end to banks selling mortgages to third-parties
  • New laws to remove “sale of property” as grounds for the termination of a tenancy under the Residential Tenancies Act.
  • For receiver firms to have the same obligations as landlords

The call for a change in legislation follows the news that a number of tenants in the Eden development in Blackrock, Co. Cork have received notifications to quit their homes by receivers. Up to 200 families in Tyrrelstown, Co. Dublin are also facing eviction.
