You asked

Can I have a successful career and be a hands-on mum?

While the answer to this question is yes, it does require you to figure out what success means in both cases. It’s impossible to be a career woman and still be present for important events in your child’s life.

A good way to figure out how to balance your career with being a mum is to make a list of the things you want most in your life. Write down everything, from having to fetch your child at 5pm every day to wanting to own your own business, and everything else that’s important to you. Then put them in order. You’ll find that it’s a lot easier to decide which to choose when it comes to a choice between your child’s life and your career if you have it all down on paper. Speak to your partner too. Getting ahead in your career as a mum is going to require teamwork and you need to get him on board with your plans.

Finally, remember that there’s nothing wrong with wanting to have a career. It’s okay to want success in other areas of your life and to be a good mum!
