According to well-known children's charity, Barnados, increasing an adult's salary would not only postively impact their financial status, but also improve their offspring's literary levels.

The suggestion comes after statistics from last year's findings indicate that a child's maths and reading skills increased by 4% for every 1% more earned by their mum and dad.

Further to this, the charity insists free education should be made the utmost priority in the lead-up to the next election.

Addressing the issue which affects a great many parents, Head of Advocacy, June Tinsley, said: “The reality is while we do have a supposedly free education system, for parents they have to pay for school books, voluntary contributions, classroom resources  all those things which impact on a child's participation in education .”

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, Ms. Tinsley asserted these issues could be remedied with governement investment, explaining: “As part of our 'Rise Up' campaign, we've done costings which shows that the government - if they invested €103m - they would generate free primary education for all children.”
