A ten-year-old boy has made history recently after becoming the recipient of Ireland's first 3D-printed hand.

Staff and students from the Institute of Technology Tallaght are said to have have revolutionised Josh McKenna's life after providing him with the country's first 3D-printed hand.

The 10-year-old Portarlington-native, who was born with just a thumb on his right hand, even assisted with the development of the design which is said to offer the schoolboy additional freedom of movement and dexterity.

By choosing the colours for the hand, which was designed by IT lecturer, Stephen Dignam, Josh played a vital role in the production process.

Recalling her son's reaction to the 'Terminator-style' limb, proud mum, Annette, said: "Josh is very laid-back. He just loves it, and the other kids love it in school."

Unveiling his new hand for delighted classmates, Josh apparently took the whole thing in his stride with Annette, revealing: "The first morning he wore it into school, he just walked into the classroom, gave a little wave with it and said:' Hiya lads'.

We're delighted for Josh!
