Following the tragic fire in Newbridge,Co. Kildare yesterday, a shocked community has sprung into action in an effort to assist those affected by the horrifying blaze.

In addition to donating clothes and other assorted goods, the community have set up a bank account to help those whose homes were engulfed in flames yesterday evening.

Six houses in Millfield Manor suffered extensive damage when a blaze swept through the residential row in a matter of minutes.

Commenting on the devastating incident, firefighter Celina Barrett asserted that saving the homes became 'impossible' as a result of the strong wind roaring through the estate.

With sobering realisation, emergency services resigned themselves to the fact that nothing could be done for the six houses, saying: "After 30 minutes the priority changed to stopping the fire spreading to a neighbouring terrace because it was realised that it was impossible to save the six homes that were burning."

Royston Sports Club has seen an influx of donations from concerned residents eager to help those affected by yesterday's tragic turn of events.

A 39-year-old man is being questioned in connection with the blaze.

Our hearts go out to all the residents.
